I attended a workshop by Suki Salvador (MEGA magazine's Creative Director) about Making It Big In Advertising. He shared with us what he called his '12 commandments' to succeed:
1) Know your sh*t -before you accept any job, you should know how your camera works, etc.
2) Study history- know who you're dealing with: makeup, styles, hair, study history of beauty, makeup, fashion, brands
3) Don't be shy- don't be scared to talk to somebody more seasoned, more experienced than you. You have to be their equal. Interface with people
4) Shoot. Shoot. Shoot.- Practice with everything, with everyone. When you practice with your shooting, you make mistakes. That way, when you get a job in photography you won't make those mistakes anymore.
5) Have a point of view- Make sure your point of view is your own. Stick with it and believe in it. It will make you famous in your job. Be known for something amazing. It starts here.
6) Take control- when you are shooting, you are boss on the set. You have to take control of your shoot. You make the magic happen. Keep in mind what clients ar elooking for. Don't be interrupted by what others say. Focus, take control.
7) Collaborate- you have to collaborate with your crew and clients. You have to make sure you get everyone's input, do the best you can by collaborating before and after your shoot
8) Create a strong portfolio- everyone has to have a portfolio. Update portfolio every month as much as possible. Print out favorites and put it in a book. It's handy all the time. Don't get attached to your old photos. Update new ones.
9) Make industry friends- You have to make relationships outside the shoot: genuine friends with industry people. Always choose people who have similar interests to you so you can grow in this industry. Make sure to go to an event. If you're not seen, you're forgotten.
10) Get published- your work has to be seen in newspapers, magazines, print based, brochure and your name has to be there. If people don't see your name, they move to others. When you get published, you get legitimized. Editors get the ones with talent. Also, be nice. You need to be good. Nice goes a long way.
11) Have passion and stamina. Make yourself available to people.
12) Be thankful for everyone you work with.
So, that's it. Thanks for the added lessons, MEGA Magazine and FujiFilm!
